A web based on 'advertising' is is not sustainable. Respect your audience, optimize your resources. You shouldn't need to download 30MB of JavaScript just to load a text article. Block ads, trackers, distractions, obscenities when surfing the web. Globally block domains from Facebook & Google, inspect what 3rd party requests websites are making.

Filter anti-user features like - YouTube's 'recommendations page' & other such addictive sites - should you use them in the first place.

What is Free / Libre Software? | Open Source (FOSS)

The word 'Free' means freedom, not free of cost. Better represented by the French/Spanish word 'libre' or liberty. It's not the same as 'Open Source' or 'FOSS', that's a diluted term for free/libre software.

The 'freedom' to do what you want, how you want & for whatever purpose as you wish. The freedom to sell the software too! for any price or make as many copies as you wish and distribute it for gratis i.e. free of cost.

Freedom denying software is called 'proprietary software'. It limits your user freedom, often spies on you, prevents you from selling software, prevents you from using your computer on your own terms. In effect, you just rent it from the proprietor. e.g. DRM, Facebook, Discord, Zoom, Google Play Services, Windows, iOS, MacOS, etc and don't actually own your computer.

Most of the world runs on Free/Libre software these days, from cars, server, phones, shops, many enterprises, activists, governments & normal people like you and me, exercise our freedoms, every single day. This video talks about the ideas behind free-software & its implications that help drive modern society.

Sometimes the answer isn't 'Going Big'. Rather than build new centralized platforms that will inevitably fail in proportion to their user base. Choose 'protocols' that can naturally scale and deliver the best for every person. Smaller tight knit communities 'on your own terms' that are user-first is the future of social media. Facebook's goal is not to 'connect the world' their true goals lie in their business model 'to sell your data to advertisers'.

#Fediverse tries to put social networking back into your hands, just like email and websites - it's based on the #ActivityPub protocol that's internationally accepted and works according to your needs and not to some advertiser's! Pick any server or host your own.

Brave Search | Brave is launching an Independent, Private alternative to Google Search

This week Brave announced that they're developing their own independent search engine to compete with Google in the saturated search engine market. Most search engines piggyback on larger big tech search engines like Bing (Microsoft) and Yahoo for results - indexing the web is a mammoth task.

This would mean the 25 million monthly active Brave users would be introduced to a seamless native - Google level UX for the Brave ecosystem. They're also implementing some unique features under the code name 'Goggles' to let you experiment different perspectives for search results.

If this is open source and you can disable ads with uBlock Origin then this feels like good competition for DuckDuckGo! There's a beta sign up page on their website and is due to launch this June (Summer - USA).
