From the drippy forests of Thuringia to the lake-riddled swampland of Lithuania...

The lolling hills of Silesia to the harsh, alpine peaks of Transylvania...

Central Europe was invaded, peopled and organized from the West. The fall of Western Rome is a story usually told looking northward. Roman and Greek historians tell us a tale of decay and destruction brought about by wild-eyed northern savages.

But what did it look like from the other side? How did the Germanic peoples view the fall of Rome, arrival of Christianity, and the rise of early European kingdoms?

In this lecture, Gregory Conte reconstructs the "barbarian" migrations (die Völkerwanderungen) from the northern point of view, through Germanic legends and romanized Germanic historians. What do we know about early Germanic language, culture, religion, law and government? How did the Germans advance from the petty tribes of Arminius' day (c. 9 AD) to the vast kingdoms in the era of Theodoric the Goth (c. 500)? And perhaps most importantly, how did the mingling of the Germanic and Latin-speaking peoples form the basis of European culture?

Prussian Socialism 45: The Rise of Byzantium and the Illyrian Soldier-State

Between AD 270 and the late 500s, the Roman Empire declined and fell to Germanic invaders, while a new, Byzantine Empire arose in the East.

At least, that's what it looks like. But states and peoples are different things. Sometimes a founding people dies, but its state lives on. That is what happened in Rome in the 3rd century. The original Roman people lost power to a new, hungry race of frontier-fighters: the so-called Illyrian Soldier-Emperors.

Contrary to the common opinion, the Illyrian-Danubian emperors weren't the outcome of increasing "diversity" or "tolerance" of the Roman State. They were a new, as-yet-unnamed people, who--abandoned by the central government--took matters into their own hands.

From Aurelian "the Restorer of the World" to Diocletian, Constantine the Great, Theodosius I and Justinian, these "Illyrians" built a state-within-a-state, kept the Roman Empire alive for two centuries, and carved out a new empire from its ruins. They restructured army, shook up the administration, and oversaw the most radical religious reform in European history. Theirs is the real history of the "late Roman" and "early Byzantine" empires.

Only amidst the chaos of the Persian and Islamic invasions of the early 600s did the 300-year-old Illyrian regime succumb... when they were finally overthrown by a new breed of Cappadocian and Armenian officers.

Sixteen men killed. Dozens wounded. Blood on the cobblestones. The movement shattered. The police chasing down survivors.

But the "Beerhall Putsch" was only half the story. The real test was in the courtroom. In 24 tense days of witness-examinations, speeches, and arguments--interrupted by hours of mind-numbing boredom--Adolf Hitler faced down the Bavarian authorities and the hateful and ignorant international press.

In the streets, physical courage. In the courtroom, moral conviction. It takes both kinds of bravery to change history. While many Nationalists had had the courage to stare down the rifle-barrels of the Bavarian State Police, only Adolf Hitler had the steadfastness to lead them to victory in the trial that followed.

His case?

It is not my comrades and I who are guilty of treason... it's the Weimar government! Those traitors, who signed Germany's freedom away with the Treaty of Versailles.

Hitler also blamed Bavarian State Commissar Gustav von Kahr. Because Kahr and the police had lead the Nazis to believe that they had official support.

Sounds a bit like Donald Trump's treacherous actions on January 6th, no?

The 1924 "Hitler-Prozess" made the NSDAP. No longer would the movement seek mere reactionary aims. Instead, it would shoot for revolutionary change!

Prussian Socialism Episode 40 The Post-War Liberal Copes of Professor Friedrich Meinecke and His Careerist Attempts to Defame Hitler

In his book "The German Catastrophe" (1946) historian Friedrich Meinecke (1862-1954) argued that National Socialism was a "degeneration" of the German character and intellectual tradition and that the "militarism" of Prussia retarded Germany's culture.

What an insufferable nerd.

To produce this ridiculous and opportunistic argument, Professor Meinecke had to ignore 1) Jewish international financial power 2) Germany's geographical position and the attendant strategic considerations 3) the entire doctrine of National Socialism as described in Mein Kampf 4) communism and the social problems brought about by the industrial revolution.

Like all liberals and Judeo-Anglo-American stooges, Herr Professor Meinecke simply brushed off the key facts of the 20th century and wistfully called for a return to classical liberalism and the "culture" of the Goethe era. What he failed to understand is that culture is not possible without idealism--the willingness to subordinate oneself to something greater.

Culture is downstream of politics. As much as upper-middle-class nerds like Meinecke want to pretend otherwise... you cannot have art, literature, music or high society without discipline, sacrifice and order. Duh. Read Aristotle you nerd.

Prussian Socialism Episode 39: Nazi Hero Otto Ernst Remer on Plotting and Betrayal Against Hitler on July 20. 1944 (Verschwörung und Verrat um Hitler)

Why did the July 20, 1944 coup fail? In his 1981 book "Verschwörung und Verrat um Hitler" Major General Otto Ernst Remer--the main officer responsible for crushing the plot--accuses the conspirators of cowardice and gross incompetence. Why didn't Stauffenberg check that Hitler had actually died? Why did the plotters fail to ensure smooth communications? Why did someone not just walk up and shoot Hitler?

In this lecture, Gregory Conte summarizes Remer's arguments. Fundamentally, the conspirators lacked the initiative and attention to detail of front-line troops. They failed to do obvious contingency planning. They failed to come up with a workable plan. And worse, once there was no turning back, their cowardice and indecision prevented them from doing the one thing that might have saved their lives: succeeding.

For over 50 years after that fateful day, Remer expressed no regret for his actions. If you want to overthrow a legitimate, popular leader for personal gain in the service of monarchism, reaction, capitalism and Jewish finance, you'd better bring your A-game. The sad part is, that the mentality of the July 20th conspirators is now the mentality that dominates the governments of all Western nations--treason, deceit, blackmail and cowardice. The only way to put a stop to these rats is the same way Remer did... by employing the honor- and duty-bound warrior ethos.

Prussian Socialism Episode 38: The German Mindset vs the English in Werner Sombart's "Traders and Heroes"

In "Traders and Heroes" (1915) German economist Werner Sombart argued that the German "heroic" attitude is better than the English "mercantile" way of life. Whereas the merchant asks, "Life, what can you give me?", the hero asks, "What can I give life?". The hero lives for duty, the trader lives for rights and comfort.

Is this entirely fair? Are the English really so craven? Hitler did not think so. Several sections of Mein Kampf, while not calling out Sombart by name, are explicit criticisms of his theory. Hitler saw much to admire in the English, and regarded Sombart's views as demoralizing and counter-productive to the German war-effort.

So why read Sombart? Gregory Conte argues that Sombart's idea has more relevance today than it did in 1915. "Traders and Heroes" is an excellent summary of the differences between German and Anglo-American thinking. Its usefulness to us today lies in its well-founded criticism of materialism and the doctrines based on it: Jewish capitalism, libertarianism, and self-serving individualism.

You can't beat money-power by appealing to people's greed. You have to appeal to their nobler sentiments. Only a movement based on love of duty and willingness to sacrifice can topple an evil, mammonistic regime. Our problem is not "How do we convince people of the danger of Jewish power?" but rather, "How to we convince people to put duty before rights". Just as the German of 1924 needed to be nationalized, the American of 2024 needs to be socialized.

You have heard of America’s Wild West… but what about Europe’s Wild East?

In the 1100s, several hundred Western Europeans came to Transylvania at the invitation of the Hungarian king, Geza II. Their mission: to secure the Carpathian Mountains against the attacks of the horse-archer peoples of the Eurasian Steppe.

Over the next four centuries, they built castles, churches and cities, holding the south-easternmost outpost of Western Christendom. Briefly vassals of the Turks, they returned to the Hapsburg fold after the 1683 siege of Vienna and played a crucial role in the politics of Austro-Hungary and later Romania.

The settlers—known as the Transylvanian Saxons—were reinforced by later inflows of colonists from northern Germany and the Low Countries. By the 1930s, they numbered 300,000.

The Transylvanian Saxons are just one piece of a larger, millennium-long tale of settlement, trade, and conquest—the Drang nach Osten, the “Push to the East”. Starting in the 1100s, Germanic peoples pushed eastward into the Baltic, the Balkans and even farther afield. They brought cities and agriculture to the sparsely populated and disorganized East. Their movements surged and ebbed throughout the centuries, but by the 1700s, Germanic settlements reached as far as the Volga.

Unlike the later sea-borne expansions of the Spanish, Portuguese and others, it is almost unknown in the English-speaking countries.

In November of 1918, a leftist cabal overthrew Kaiser William II and sued for peace with their country’s enemies. These traitors agreed to withdraw German troops from all enemy land and to surrender her fleet.

In so doing, they stripped Germany of all her bargaining power. It is not surprise that, in the ensuing peace-conference, Germany was made a slave of International Money-Power.

This is not a controversial view. It is—more or less—the consensus of mainstream historiography.

And despite the cease-fire, Britain maintained its hunger-blockade, causing famine throughout Germany, Austria, and much of central Europe.

In the shame-treaty that followed, signed at Versailles seven months later, Germany was forced to accept guilt for starting the war and pay a huge indemnity, among other indignities.

This was indeed a stab-in-the-back. And yet even while acknowledging all of the facts, some still allege that this betrayal was a “legend” or “a conspiracy theory”.

Jews, communists, and liberals fomented a revolution. They sold their country out. They delivered its people into the clutches of International Jewish Finance. How is that NOT a stab-in-the-back?

The Treaty of Versailles was the most crucial turning point of the last 200 years. It destroyed the European balance of power and, in due time, made the whole White World subject to Jewish money power.

Germany’s fate has become our fate.

“Faust Part 2” is the ultimate expression of the European cultural idea. In this vast, 7000-line poem, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe lays out his mature worldview.

There is hardly a topic that Goethe does not deal with: metaphysics, ethics, economics, politics, poetics, even geology. While “Faust Part 1” mostly sticks to the traditional Faust-story, “Part 2” creates a gigantic poetic-allegory. Faust ceases to be a mere lust-driven scholar and transforms into a personification of Creative Power.

With his servant, Mephisto, Faust travels across Germany and Greece, all through the ages, striving to satisfy his urge to create and to know. Along the way he meets gods, men, mythical creatures, literary heroes—the full imagination-world of Western culture.

Goethe was a 200-IQ genius who had comprehended Western art and philosophy from the Greeks on. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was one of the greatest and most versatile poets of all time, a rival to Dante, Shakespeare and Vergil.

His masterpiece is the philosophical epic Faust, which he worked on for over 50 years.
In the traditional Faust-story, Faust sells his soul to Mephistopheles in exchange for 24 years of sin and fun. In Goethe’s re-telling, Mephistopheles is bound until Faust is content with life (Werd’ ich zum Augenblicke sagen, “Verweile doch, du bist so schön”).

Faust, Part 1 is concerned with Faust’s attempts to find satisfaction in his personal life, especially by seducing the innocent girl, Gretchen. In Part 2 (not discussed in this episode), Faust goes out to work his will on the world.

Faust is generally considered the most important work of German literature, and one of the most consequential in all of European history. It is a great loss that it is barely known in America and Britain.

Who was Germany's greatest WWII general? According to Field Marschall Erich von Manstein, it was himself. In his 1955 classic Lost Victories, Manstein argues that if Hitler had only listened to him more, Germany could have won the war.

He might have had a point. In 1940, Manstein masterminded the invasion of France through the Ardennes. In early 1943, he ingeniously fought off a series of titanic Soviet offensives after the battle of Stalingrad, saving tens of thousands of Axis troops from almost certain capture or death. He even argued that Germany could have won at Kursk, and that the proposed invasion of England (Sealion) was not as crazy as it seemed.

After the war, many generals argued that Germany could have won. Prominent among them was tank-warfare theorist and Panzer commander Heinz Guderian. In his post-war book Panzer Leader, Guderian recounts his role in shaping Germany’s armored units and doctrine, arguing that Germany could have won if Hitler had listened more to his generals. Was Guderian right, or was he just coming up with excuses?

Prussian Socialism Episode 12: Frederick the Great, the Autiste King

Over the course of nearly 50 years, Frederick II (1712-86) made Prussia from a minor German state into a European power to rival Austria, France and Russia.

After snatching the rich region of Silesia from Austria, Frederick embarked on a series of legal and administrative reforms that made Prussia into the world's most enlightened state. His work was almost destroyed in the Seven Years War (1756-63) when his small and territorially divided country was invaded by Russia, Austria, France and even Sweden. Leading the army, usually in person, Frederick inflicted major defeats like Rossbach and Leuthen on his enemies, and, with a bit of luck, forced his arch-rival Maria Theresa of Austria to make peace.

Frederick is known as a man of many talents. He was a world-class flute-player, a good composer, and a prolific writer and reader. With the help of eight daily cups of coffee and many nose-fulls of snorting tobacco, Frederick packed many lifetimes of accomplishment into his 74 years. Despite his love of music and learning, he always placed his duty to his land and people first. As a military leader and man of culture, he was an inspiration to many great Europeans, including Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler.

The Nibelungenlied is a medieval German story of heroism and bloody revenge. An epic poem written down about 1200 AD, it tells the tale of the Burgundian princess Kriemhild and her long-plotted retribution for the murder of her husband, the hero Siegfried.

In this lecture, Greg Conte overviews the characters and the plot, and then compares the Nibelungenlied to other epic poems, such as the Iliad and the Song of Roland. The epics are discussed in the frame of literary analysis with reference to the Canadian professor and theorist Northrop Frye. Comparison is also made to modern story-telling like (fake and gay) super-hero movies and the Turner Diaries.

The half-Japanese aristocrat, Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi, is notorious as a promoter of race-mixing and globalism. But was that all there is to the man? Was Kalergi just a foaming-at-the-mouth defender of multiculturalism and Jewish power? Greg Conte and William discuss the life and writings of this now nearly forgotten Japo-Austrian noble, who was one of the key players in the formation of today's European and World orders.

Since his childhood, Kalergi took an intense interest in languages and philosophy. In his mid-20s, he started a movement to form a united Europe, to be led by intellectuals, statesmen, artists and financiers. Backed by Warburg money, Paneuropa was the talk of the European elite in the inter-war years.

But then Kalergi's well-laid plans were frustrated by a man who, in his view, was no more than a low-born, uneducated, Alpine peasant. It wasn't until almost a decade later that the Count was able to link up with the likes of Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle and to--at last--turn Paneuropa into a reality.

Given his seeming importance, why is Kalergi so little talked about today? Why are most of his works untranslated? Was he a villainous genius, a Jewish puppet, or something else? Greg and William cover all this and more and conclude that the European Union might in fact be worse than Kalergi even intended!
