Professional haze machine circuit exploration

This video is an exploration of the circuitry used in many professional haze and fog machines used in the event industry. Notably the Haze Base, Unique Solutions machines.
These machines share a common base control system, but differ in physical appearance.

By understanding the circuitry it will help with fault diagnostics and identifying if a PCB needs replaced.

The most common problems with these machines are pump failure, heater blockage and moisture issues on the control PCB. But relative to the heavy use equipment like this gets in the entertainment industry, they are very reliable units. Many of the problems can be attributed to user error and the rough life touring equipment has.

These machines use a water and glycol based fluid (probably triethylene/propylene glycol) which is blown as bubbles of fluid through a heated pipe at around 200 to 250 degrees celsius. The sudden heat boils the water component, shattering the glycol into tiny airborne droplets.

Mike Page has mentioned that the diodes in the thermocouple circuit are probably for an open-circuit test. If the test circuit is active and the thermocouple is intact then it will shunt the test current, but if it is open circuit the output from the amplifier will go very high.
The unit I've just looked at did actually have a physically broken thermocouple, which flagged up as an E1 error. The vibratory air pump had detached from its mounting plate inside the unit and had probably rested on the thermocouple wiring, causing the bond to fatigue on the heater.

Inside a cheap but impressive laser cube

These things are very widely available, which is a slight issue, as in the wrong hands they can pose a risk of permanent eye damage. This device should not be aimed at people's eyes and should NEVER be given to a kid as a toy.

The circuitry is notable for the way the microcontroller is powered via its own regulator, and then turns on the rest of the circuitry by enabling another adjustable regulator set to 3.1V.
That has two advantages. It greatly reduces standby current by disabling most of the circuitry in standby, and also allows the voltage to be chosen to suit the lasers with simple current regulation using a resistor.

The rotating diffraction pattern disk runs far too fast in this unit, but that could maybe be slowed with the addition of a series resistor to the motor, noting that too high a value may cause the motor to fail to start rotating.

I'm not sure if the voltage drop across the MOSFETs was due to PWM for laser current control or if they were not turning on fully and operating in their linear region.

The green laser in this unit appears top be a DPSS module (Diode Pumped Solid State) that uses an infrared LED to stimulate a crystal to lase at a different infrared wavelength, and then that infrared laser passes through another crystal that frequency doubles it to visible green light. Unfortunately that means that a lot of invisible infrared laser energy comes out, and very few companies make any effort to filter that out.
This is made especially dangerous by the critical nature of the frequency doubling crystal, which can be affected by temperature and other factors. It means that in situations like a cold environment it can look like the laser is very dim or barely glowing, and masks the fact that the full strength infrared laser component may still be present.

The WLED controllers are preloaded with the WLED firmware and have all the extra circuitry required, including onboard voltage regulation for the internal circuitry, level shifters for the data outputs and a MOSFET to turn the power to the LEDs off when not in use to reduce standby power. Total teardown of a common solenoid valve

I've actually made a video about this type of solenoid actuated valve before, but it's always good to have a revisit for those who may not have stumbled across the older video.

This is a very common valve sold on the usual online marketplaces. It seems quite well made, but as always, you should use one from a prominent local supplier for any critical applications where failure could cause flooding or other adverse scenarios. But for experiments and prototyping, this valve will probably be perfectly acceptable.

I like the way that the valve is entirely serviceable, so that if it fouled up inside, it would be viable to clean it out fully to restore normal operation. The entire valve assembly is so cheap that it's viable to just keep one in stock for quick replacement if needed.

Russian Fakita bug repelling device

It turns out that Russia does have a huge mosquito problem in some parts. I didn't know that.

This unit is basically a self regulating pad based insecticide vapouriser. It takes standard pads that are preloaded with a pyrethrin oil. When the unit is active it heats the pad to slowly release a small quantity of vapour that affects the nervous system of insects and inhibits their normal behaviour including biting. Pyrethrins are based on a natural plant extract from a species of chrysanthemum that has a long history of being used to deter insects from crops.

Most devices like this use a synthetic pyrethrin like transfluthrin, allethrin, metofluthrin etc.

The heater in this unit is based on a PTC disk that adjusts its resistance based on temperature, so it heats up quickly with higher current and then self regulates down to a lower level.
The pads often have a colourant added that indicates how much of the oil in them has been used. They usually go from being blue to white.

The unit is designed to be powered from the fake Makita (Fakita) themed batteries often supplied with generic power tools. Those batteries tend to have a low-voltage shutoff feature built in, which is important with this unit, as it just acts as a continuous resistive load.

Exploring a solar Mandala light

These lights are all over the Internet at the moment, often with very fake AI generated adverts showing them as being huge, very bright and sometimes rotating. I've not seen a rotating one yet, although it is possible and would be a nice effect.

The primary science of the effect is based on a single point source of light casting a sharp image through a pattern, that can be punched or laser cut metal, or printed glass or plastic.

The effect needs a small bright source of light. If you try to use a bigger point of light it reduces the sharpness.

This version is based on a classic solar lighting circuit with a dedicated chip that boosts the voltage using an inductor to allow a higher voltage LED to be run from a classic NiMH cell.
There is a little bit of extra circuitry to ensure a continuous DC current to ensure reliable operation of the colour changing LED.

Thee are a few things that will cause this light to fail over time. Some of them can be addressed and some are more difficult to prevent.
The trickiest one to resolve in an outdoor situation is the probability of the metal case rusting away and staining the wall it's mounted on in the process. If you really like the effect it may be viable to 3D print a replacement case that resists rusting and can be swapped when needed.
The issues that can be resolved are mainly waterproofing the solar panel, electronics and LED.
When water seeps in behind a solar panel it can cause progressive electrolytic erosion of the solar panels components. It's good to seal it from both sides. UV resistant clear garden tape can seal the front of the panel and buy extra lifespan, but inside will require the application of a suitable sealer.
The circuitry can be coated in lacquer or grease to keep the water away from it, and it is often a good idea to bypass the switch with a blob of solder too, as they are prone to internal corrosion.
The NiMH cell holder can also be coated in a suitable grease to exclude moisture and oxygen from the battery contacts.

Placement of these lights is complicated by their wall mounting nature. A solar panel will collect the most energy during the day when it's pointed at the path of the sun across the sky. The fact the light is on a wall means the solar panel can harvest less energy due to its angle in relation to the sun. You also have to be careful to mount them where the light will get the maximum direct sunshine exposure without it being blocked by buildings, trees and other foliage.

You can find these lights from many sources, possibly including local shops. I don't recommend buying them from the suspicious online adverts as they are often overpriced.

Variable power controller for various loads

This module is a classic phase angle controller suited to some specific types of motors (mainly universal motors with carbon brushes) and many simple resistive loads like heaters and tungsten lights.

It uses phase angle control, which involves turning a triac on at a variable position on each half of the mains sinewave. This is electrically noisy, so it's good practice to add a suitably rated filter.

Note that the failure mode of a triac is usually to short out, and as such, there should be extra layers of safety for loads like heaters to prevent uncontrolled heating. That could be a simple inline thermal switch set for a worst case temperature.

Neat power bank with unusual "anti-burn" polarity protection

The "anti-burn" feature of this power bank is not just polarity protection for the circuitry, but also polarity protection for the cells, so that if they are inserted incorrectly they will not short each other out.

Obviously I had to test that.

I was expecting it to be something very simple like a PTC fuse for each cell, or possibly the classic single MOSFET polarity protector, but it's actually quite clever, because it is dealing with two independent cells.

Exploring a lead acid battery charger module (with schematic)

I don't see lead acid batteries being banned anytime soon, so this little charge control module could be quite useful. Especially for equipment with a built in charger that has failed.

It's based on a dedicated charge control chip that integrates buck regulator control, current sensing and voltage monitoring to manage the proper charging of 12V lead acid batteries.

The integrated bridge rectifier means this module can be used with AC or DC power supplies.

Inside a solar nautical beacon

An interesting solar beacon with a few strobing patterns to choose from for identification purposes.
The lithium cell tested at a surprisingly high 1775mAh.

The circuitry is quite well designed with just one quirk. To make the unit as waterproof as possible it has a rubber sealing washer, but also has a silicone-like sealing goo in the threads.

Turning the beacon on and off, and selecting the pattern is done with an external magnet.

I tested the solar panels on a bright sunny day and in their triangular configuration the output was about 80mA. When laid flat side by side the output was 260mA.

Inside the USB biting insect deterrent units with unusual heaters

Note that these pyrethrin vaporizers are not recommended for long term use in rooms where cats are present.

Also note that some of these units may come with chemicals that are banned in your country, due to regulations of suspicious validity.

I made a previous video about these, but ended up rambling about pyrethrins (a natural plant chemical that affects bugs) and completely failed to take any of them apart.

Since taking things apart is what this channel is all about, here's the video where I take them ALL apart and smash open one of the heaters.

I thought it was just going to be a simple resistor for heating, but it seems to be a self regulating type with an odd characteristic.

Because mosquitos and other biting insects are a huge issue around the world, there is a high availability of devices like this from online sellers. Most seem to use a very refined oil as the carrier with just 1% or less of the pyrethrin (usually prallethrin). The units heat a wick like an Airwick aroma plug and put enough into the air to deactivate bugs, while being well within safe limits for humans. Don't leave the oil bottles where kids or pets can play with them (the same applies to aroma plug bottles).

The oil atomising units usually have a 3W heater in them and the bottles of oil are very cheap when bought online. Much cheaper than the locally branded ones.

UVC safety demo for my colleagues

A demo of what a UVC tube looks like when lit. They are a very pleasing ghostly blue, which unfortunately means that people have accidentally used them as a decorative item with painful results.

Everyone in the room had glasses on that blocked UVC. Most ordinary glasses and plastics will block it. It's actually harder to find materials that allow it to pass through.
We left the room for a while to allow the tube to come up to full power.

Note that defeating the safety shutter in a socket by shoving a metal key in the earth hole and then ramming bare wires into the live and neutral holes is not a recommended connection method, and poses a high shock risk.

UVC tubes are used for germicidal purposes in food processing equipment and in medical applications. There are two common types with different glass filtering properties. The classic germicidal tube only passes the 254nm wavelength from a mercury vapour discharge, but there are versions like this one that also pass the 184nm peak that breaks down oxygen bonds in air and allows temporary formation of short-lived active air molecules like ozone.

If humans or animals stare at a UVC tube it causes a temporary effect called photokeratitis which is the same painful effect experienced by being exposed to arc-welding flash (also strong UVC). There is a delay before the symptoms set in and it feels like sand in your eyes. But the discomfort will soon pass. If needed, medical intervention will offer a mild anaesthetic for the eyes to suppress the discomfort. A classic welders trick is to slice raw potato and apply the juice to the eyes - but I can't offer that as official medical advice.

High exposure can also cause surface damage to the skin, but contrary to a previous belief that it posed a risk of causing skin cancer, the UVC wavelength is so short that it can't pass deep enough into the skin to reach the critical areas. UVA and UVB pose a much higher risk in that area.

Two notable events where the organisers used high power UVC tubes as decoration were Hype-Beast and a "Bored Ape Yacht Club" event. Both resulted in high admissions to hospitals for skin and eye issues.

Other common accidental exposures are in the HVAC industry when workers open duct inspection panels where there are UVC tubes present, and when maintenance operatives accidentally use UVC tubes in place of the similar colour UVA ones in insect traps.

Most UVC tubes are identifiable by being clear glass instead of the white phosphor coated glass of traditional fluorescent tubes.

Fungal nail "laser" thing with puffed up lithium cell

I'm not sure how effective this device will actually be at killing nail fungus. There are professional machines that use light for treatment - often in conjunction with specialist dyes.

The instructions suggest using it twice a day for THREE MONTHS! That smacks of "getting out of warranty".

This unit uses four LEDs (not a laser as implied). Three blue and one infrared. All the blue LEDs are in parallel with a single resistor, and the IR LED is on its own with the same value of resistor, so given the IR LEDs lower forward voltage (about half of the blue) it will be running at massively higher power (250mA) than the blue ones.

The product came with a pre-failed lithium cell that is well puffed up. It's marked 400mAh. In its pre-failed state it yielded a consistent capacity of 224mAh. When a lithium cell puffs up it indicates that it is time to let it fully discharge and then recycle it safely.

The unit does have useful circuitry for switching a load with a countdown timer for a fixed (unadjustable) duration, plus a battery charge circuit. So it may be useful in other applications like an exposure timer or reminder.

Perplexing remote control RGB LED module

This module uses a microcontroller and a set of fully addressable RGB LEDs but only uses them for single colours. I wonder if the original intent was to have colour chasing effects, but they discovered that the software was too complex or the processor too basic to achieve that result.

Or maybe they just decided that the addressable LEDs are so cheap that they might as well use a huge string of them for single colours by sending the same three bytes out for every single LED.

It certainly makes the PCB design a lot simpler with three-track power and data going to all the LEDs. The alternative would have required four tracks, a set of resistors and three transistors for the red, green and blue channels.

Whatever the intended application is they have implemented some level of power saving by using a single MOSFET to shut down all the LEDs when they are off. The WS2812B style addressable LEDs tend to have a slight current draw even when unlit.

The module does have an ICSP (In Circuit Serial Programming) port, and the chip may actually be reprogrammable. Many similar circuits use OTP (One Time Programmable) microcontrollers to save costs.

Rather predictably, this is another item from our favourite Chinese purveyor of tat - AliExpress.

Ancel BM200 car battery monitor teardown

This unit is designed to be stuck to your car battery and connected to its terminals. It then sends voltage, temperature and movement data via bluetooth to an app on your phone to help you test and monitor things like battery health (the ability to store charge and supply high current) and whether the vehicle's charging system is performing properly.

For short term diagnostic use in multiple vehicles, it's possible to use it in a plug-in format. Possibly in the OBD port.

The design and construction suggests that Ancel's designers have experience of making things resilient enough for automotive use. The case is very well sealed, and even the wires are sealed against moisture ingress between their cores.

The app lets you select between lead acid or lithium battery chemistry.

The Bluetooth functionality works well, with the unit connecting quickly to its app once assigned. Voltage accuracy is very acceptable.

All in all, it seems quite a well designed unit, although I can't vouch for its long term performance.

Inside a sound detecting dusk switch with interesting circuitry

This device detects dusk and only turns a light or other load on for a fixed time if it hears a noise. That could be useful as a security device, as an alternative to a PIR sensor.

The circuitry is notable for using a common technique for switching medium loads with very low control current. But that does limit the power it can switch.

This circuit has lots of interesting quirks. From the load switching to the use of the chip's internal pull up resistor as part of the dusk sensing voltage divider.

Clever soft-start module for AC power tool motors

Despite them rating this module at 20A I'd suggest using it at much lower current to avoid excessive heat dissipation from the triac. In some applications it will also benefit from having its tab mounted to a heat dissipating surface.

When powered up, this unit uses phase angle control to gently ramp the output up over a few seconds. It is aimed at specific loads like power tools with universal motors (the type with carbon brushes). It should not be used with some electronic loads like switching power supplies and some motors.

The main advantages of the soft start are reduced peak starting current to avoid nuisance circuit breaker tripping, and also the greatly reduced strain on the mechanical components.
Note that there is no RF noise filtering, so some radio noise may occur locally during the initial ramp up.

The circuitry is very clever. It uses a microcontroller to drive a triac and uses a simple zero crossing point detection circuit for three functions - triac trigger timing, to reset as soon as the power is removed and also to control a simple resistive dropper so that it is only active for a short part of the sine wave near the zero crossing point.

It's possible that adding an external snubber network (100nF capacitor in series with a 100 ohm resistor) may give better protection to the triac.

The triac is from the BTA series, so its mounting tab is isolated, but note that some triacs have live heatsink tabs. The suffix B usually indicates gate sensitivity.

The interesting world of pyrethrin biting-insect control

Note that these pyrethrin vaporizers are not recommended for long term use in rooms with poor airflow where cats are present. Cats may have greater sensitivity to the vapour than humans, so if they show odd behaviour then discontinue use of the unit. I'm finding mixed results on this subject - it may be direct ingestion of the liquid that poses the main hazard.

Thousands of years ago, it was discovered that a specific type of chrysanthemum plant had the effect of interfering with the nervous systems of insects and could be used to protect crops. The plant was cultivated, processed and the resultant powder was sold as an early insecticide.

With modern technology the original pyrethrins have been replicated and in some instances modified to make them more effective.

These devices use resistively heated ceramic rings to evaporate a carrier oil from a wick in a slow and controlled manner using just a few watts of power. They are very similar to the common household aroma plugs that evaporate a carrier with aroma chemicals.

The plug-in vaporisers are common in places like India, China and other countries with a mosquito problem. But they also work in countries where other biting insects like midges and no-see-ums are a nuisance. The pyrethrin vapour affects the insects nervous system and acts as a deterrent or disables the insects while in that area.

The contents of the bottles are usually about 1% prallethrin or transfluthrin in an excipient (carrier) oil like very refined odour free kerosene or isoparaffin.

Power consumption of the plug-in or USB vaporisers is usually around 3W. The units are mostly used at night when the biting insects are most active.

These units are considered safe for large mammals like humans, especially at the tiny amounts in the air. But the bottles should be kept away from kids and pets who may try to ingest the contents. There is also a risk that cats have a lower tolerance to pyrethrins, so they should not be exposed to the vapour for long periods of time.

Be VERY careful if you get one of these. These lights are designed to sterilise cabinets by emitting shortwave ultraviolet light that destroys bacteria, viruses and just about anything else exposed to the light. If you view the tube directly with no eye protection then there is the risk of "arc eye" (photokeratitis) which will cause extreme discomfort after a delay. Your eyes will recover quickly, but it's a horrible sensation. The UVC can also cause serious skin irritation like sunburn.

Unusual rechargeable LED light

Quite an odd style in terms of operation and construction. By default the LEDs are driven with very high current that seems to be limited by transistor gain, but it's possible to nudge the current down by swapping the base resistors.

I like the way the circuitry can be popped out from the front of the light, but it lacks the directionality of a traditional keychain light. It may be useful for applications requiring a soft wash of light though.

The cell capacity measured in at 260mAh after a few charge cycles.

With the resistor modification the white LED current was:-

10K = 78mA

4.7K = 160mA

2.2K = 338mA

1K = 600mA

You can either swap out the existing surface mount resistor or remove it and carefully solder in a replacement quarter watt resistor.

Oddly complicated dimmable sticky fly trap

I was expecting this unit to be super-simple inside with a capacitive dropper, a zener to cap the voltage and a potentiometer in series with a string of LEDs. But it turns out to be much more complicated.

I guess the justification is that it is universal voltage and the UV LEDs are run at higher current than the blue ones.

I subsequently noticed that the potentiometer is only used for part of its arc, and as such the full PWM range is scaled into that arc.

This was a random eBay purchase.

Inside a rechargeable 8-filament camping/fishing light

A rather stylish little light with eight LED filaments and a spotlight beam. It looks good when lit, although it does drive the LEDs quite hard (600mA at full power).

The manufacturing process must be very time consuming, as the LED filaments are linked together with a loop of wire at one end, and manually soldered to it.

The vicinity of the filament connections to the chrome plating is a bit squirmy, and the internal lithium cell has connections directly soldered to it's ends and they are shoved down inside the tube in the vicinity of soldered connections. When I reassembled this I put insulating pads on both ends of the cell.

The lithium cell is a 14500 sized cell (14mm diameter by 50mm long) and although it's marked as being 500mAh, a test showed a capacity of 317mAh. Maybe a candidate for a salvaged vape cell?

If you wish, you could change the two 1.5 ohm resistors for higher value ones (3.3 ohm?) to tame the current through the LEDs and get a much longer run time.

Luck-based lithium charging

I'm really not sure why stuff like this is made. Lithium cells are energy storage devices that need to be treated with respect, but in this case they've literally broken every single rule.

At first I thought that the chip may have been a dedicated solar garden light chip with integrated charge control, but it appears to be a very standard cheap microcontroller where they have abused the internal protection diodes to charge the lithium cell, while doubling up as dusk sensing. I hoped they might have done something clever like detecting a high voltage on the microcontroller power rails and then toggling the load on and off to shunt excess charge, but they haven't.

I made a test setup where I emulated the solar panel putting out 50mA and used a battery of three NiMH cells to emulate the lithium cell with less risk when overcharged. I terminated the test at 4.4V with no sign of charge regulation. When the battery is disconnected the charge voltage floats up to the full solar panel output (6.5V) minus the diode voltage drop.

A classic all in one lithium protection chip could have helped here, but does also pose a risk of allowing the supply across the chip to float quite high when it breaks the circuit.

In some climates these units would be usable by relying on the amount of solar energy during the day not being able to fully charge the lithium cell, and then general usage at night making sure it was fully discharged again overnight. But in sunny climates or where the unit was left in its off-state or not triggered much at night, the cell could soon be overcharged.

When you add the high temperatures these solar cells are exposed to on hot days, and the very taboo way they attempt to charge the cells at sub-zero temperatures then it's amazing that there aren't more fires caused by these lights.

The final test capacity of the 14500 lithium cell was 264mAh.

There is no proper current limiting for the LEDs. They seem to rely on the cell, wire and transistor gain/resistance to limit the current.

If you buy one of these as a novelty to explore, then I do not recommend mounting it anywhere it can cause a fire.

Cheap LED PAR can test and teardown

There is one obvious issue with this unit, the fan needs more space between it and the power supply to improve airflow. Other than that, this unit is quite well built.

As always, the power supply does pose a risk if it does not have good electrical separation in its transformer. I haven't torn the power supply in this light apart (yet).

This is a dual colour warm-white and cold-white unit that can create a wide range of colour temperatures. It can be set locally or controlled via a DMX network.
Biggest surprise was discovering that this fixture responds to RDM (Remote Device Management), a bidirectional communication protocol that allows lighting fixtures on a network to identify themselves, show their location on request (by lighting and/or moving) and then accept remote configuration of their main setup parameters and their DMX address. This means that you can set up a long run of lights remotely.

This unit seems to use a standard two colour 100W LED with each section configured as 100 LED chips in a 10 by 10 array. I tested the power as 40W per colour and 80 W total. Much higher than I was expecting.

The control module has potential for use in other projects. It is based on an ARM Cortex processor with what seems to be increasingly refined software. The unit should be able to accommodate a wide input voltage range and can have the current sense resistors adjusted to adapt it to driving other LEDs.

The best way to access the unit is to remove the bracket/stand and split the two halves (two hex screws) and then remove the two screws at each end that attach onto one of the halves. That way the side can be lifted off for easy access.

This came from AliExpress as a Leleght 100w cob par light. But unfortunately the link is now dead.
It cost an unusually low £22 shipped from a UK warehouse.

It's worth mentioning that this type of light is often called a PARcan after the type of light it emulates - namely a Parabolic Aluminised Reflector lamp. The original tungsten PARcans are very power hungry, with the PAR64 usually being rated 1000W.

Complex 555 based frequency or PWM generator

This seemingly simple module took more time than usual to reverse engineer, as it uses unusual circuitry to allow a variable frequency stream of pulses or alternatively a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal.

The main purpose of the unit seems to be for providing adjustable speed and direction control to a stepper motor driver, but I'm not sure why it also has the PWM option. Perhaps for servo position control?

Inside a cheap "waterproof" power supply (with safety issues)

I'd call this power supply "weather resilient", but not quite waterproof. It may find applications inside signage for powering a low 12V load of 1A or less, but it starts pulsing after a while if pushed to the full stated 2A. Note that it does not comply with any safety standard with regard to human contact, and should only be considered as a novelty for the technically inclined.

The circuitry is almost a perfect copy of the datasheet for the DK1203 control IC. Noting that the datasheet does state a maximum power rating of 12W in this configuration, so the usual rules of using grey import power supplies at half their quoted rating is valid here.

The PCB electrical separation is tolerable (but the transformer separation isn't), and they do seem to have used a real class Y filter capacitor.

The transformer is wound with an inner primary winding of 49 turns, a middle secondary winding of 12 turns of two parallel wires and an outer primary winding of 25 turns. There is a single turn of tape between layers, and the secondary winding is in contact with the primary winding at the ends.
So not a power supply that is suited for safe human contact with the output. In fault conditions the 12V output could still be 12V, but referenced to the mains supply.

The short supply cable was very thin copper coated steel and the output cable was copper coated aluminium.

As usual with these things, they could have made a safe and acceptable unit for very little extra cost.

Making champagne with cheap wine

Technically speaking, real Champagne is made with grapes from a very specific region of France.
Because of the restricted supply it is treated as a status drink for the rich.

But the harsh reality is that even self professed experts often fail to differentiate between real Champagne and common wine that has been carbonated.

With a suitable carbonator like the Drinkmate (not a sponsor) you can turn the trashiest white wine into either a subtly carbonated beverage, or in this case into a super-trashy over-carbonated fizzy joy.

I totally over-carbonated it this time. But that's fine. It just froths up a bit more and takes longer to depressurise. Subtle carbonation is just as effective and less messy.

This is the first carbonator I've had where they literally say "carbonate whatever you want", as the cap has a slow pressure release and can be washed.

The Drinkmate unit uses standard sodastream style gas bottles. (That can also be refilled at home if you're technical.)

Making a laser lumia/aura effects disk - with a slight silicone disaster

The Lumia or Aura effect is created by shining a laser through rippled glass, but it can be difficult to find the right glass, and someone who can cut a circle from it for you. This was an experiment to use a standard filament based 3D printer to create a silicone mould for optically clear resin.

This was my first attempt at creating a mould with liquid silicone. Apparently platinum-cured silicone is very fussy about what it's used with, and my master shape was fine on its own, but when pre-textured with UV cured resin it prevented the silicone from curing in that area and caused an outgassing effect. Even with ordinary two-part resin the silicone still stayed slightly sticky where it was in contact.

In the end the answer was to use the 3D printed PLA mould on its own and add the effects onto the cast resin disks afterwards.

When using UV curing resin I strongly recommend wearing gloves to protect your hands from contact with it. The chemicals used to make it light sensitive can also make your skin sensitive to sunlight.

This is an experimental device. I don't know how the resin will hold up to specific wavelengths of laser energy. It's also probably limited to low power lasers for safety. The disk can also be used with various styles of LEDs for an aurora borealis effect.

For laser use the disk should rotate very slowly to get the best optical warping effects.

Here's the OpenSCAD script that creates your custom mould for this project.
There are two adjustable variables - one for the outer diameter of the disk and one for the central hub where it attaches to a suitable motor. The script will automatically place a small central indent for aligning a drill if needed.

To use the script, copy and paste it into the left hand "editor" window in openscad. You can either adjust the two variables directly in the script or you can enable the customizer that will open a window to do it.
If you want to use the customizer then you can open it from the "window" drop down menu.

To see the results of any changes quickly, press the cube-button with two arrows on it. To do the full build press the cube-button with the hourglass on it, and when it is complete, save the file by pressing the STL button.
That will save a design file that can be used in your choice of slicer for 3D printing.

Teardown of a ludicrous 6-head King Kong disco light

What features will we put in this light? ALL OF THEM! (That's why I don't get to the actual teardown until 8 minutes in!)

This is one of the most ludicrous mini disco lights I've taken apart. It has 8 controllable motors and loads of random effects. It requires 26 DMX channels to control, although it can be used in several stand-alone modes too, selected either on the unit or via an RF remote control.

Once again it's using an ARM Cortex processor, but this version doesn't have RDM (Remote Device Management) like some of the other lights I've looked at. It's notable that in auto mode the LEDs all start sequencing before the motors have finished calibrating.

Aside from the 12/24V power supply, the unit has two notable PCBs. The main control PCB and an auxiliary LED driver. The control PCB also drives the 8 motors - a standard DC motor, 6 mini stepper motors and one large stepper motor. The LED drive PCB is controlled with a two line clock/data interface and uses standard chips to create stand alone PWM control signals for a bank of buck drivers that limit the current through the main LEDs, strobe LED modules and the lasers.
The unit also has two fans rounding the motor count up to a respectable 10.

The processor has effectively got six serial interfaces. The LED driver panel, the addressable LEDs, the DMX network, the RF receiver, the display and button interface and its own programming interface.

This is one of the most stuffed lights of this type I've seen, but it all went back together very quickly.

This light cost £45 shipped in the UK, and like many of the disco lights on AliExpress the price varies dramatically. A nice simple search phrase is "26ch disco" as it is advertised as having 26 channels of control. Here's an affiliate link for the UK warehouse unit:-

Although I'm not a fan of lasers in lights like this, these ones will be pointing down when it's ceiling mounted, and the green laser does not appear to be a DPSS type, so it shouldn't have extra infrared laser output.

Inside a Philips sodium ignitor

This unit is used to help strike low pressure sodium (SOX) lamps in street lights. It is connected across the lamp and creates high voltage pulses that strike the neon/argon mix inside the tube to get the lamp started.

These lamps are the type that light a dull pink and then gradually go a bright yellow colour. They were chosen for street lighting because they emit almost all their light in a very narrow spectrum that closely matches the peak spectral sensitivity of the human eye.

A prominently branded lamp like the Philips Master series can last a staggering 18,000 hours.

There's a lot of science in these lights. The internal tube has to handle hot sodium plasma. The outer shell has a vacuum to ensure the internal tube can get up to its working temperature.

These lights have been rendered obsolete by the LED lights that are currently at the stage of "lucrative landfill". They will NOT last as long as a single changeable sodium bulb, and the entire light will need replaced when they fail.

If you have a large stock of new "obsolete" low pressure sodium lamps, then be aware that collectors are always looking for them on eBay. They are rapidly going in the direction of "vintage collectibles".

Reactivating an 1800's Victorian Leclanché cell

It's a strange feeling when you reactivate a Victorian electrical Leclanché cell that is literally from the 1800's. The history of these very early zinc carbon cells is fascinating, and these liquid filled glass units were often found linked together as a battery in Victorian dwellings as part of the maid-call system.

The chemistry of the cell means that they are only suited to brief bursts of power, before they need time to recover, but that was fine for the applications they were used in.
It's also the reason the first tungsten torches earned the name flashlights, as they could only be used as a series of brief flashes of light to guide your way at night.

Sal ammoniac (ammonium chloride) is used with water as the electrolyte in these cells. It's actually the same chemical that used to be used as haze powder for lighting enhancement in some entertainment venues. (When heated it gives off a vapour that then recombines in the air as a haze of microscopic crystals).

These cells did require periodic maintenance, where the water level would be topped up and the zinc rods replaced if needed.

The construction is a porous ceramic tub into which a carbon rod is placed and packed with manganese dioxide. The top is sealed with pitch (a tar-like substance) with small vent tubes.
The ceramic tub and a zinc rod are submerged in a glass jar filled with water and sal ammoniac in roughly 4 parts water to 1 part sal ammoniac by weight.
The top of the jar is painted with pitch or a wax/grease layer to discourage the sal ammoniac crystals from growing up the glass as the water evaporates.

The zinc rod is a consumable and replacements are still widely sold for electroplating and sacrificial electrode use.

I used small boost circuits to power the LEDs from the low voltage the cell was supplying under load.

Teardown of a cheap (but amazing) disco light

For such a low cost, this little disco light is incredible. Internally it has the same physical structure as many professional lights, but all scaled down to make it affordable.

While testing it I connected my DMX-cat by City Theatrical, a piece of specialist test equipment used in the entertainment industry for diagnostics and configuring lights on a network.
I was absolutely stunned when the light correctly identified itself on RDM (Remote Device Management) protocol and was able to accept remote commands over the network to change various parameters including its network address. I've never seen that in any of the listings or manuals for these lights. I subsequently found the same functionality in a cheap LED PARcan that also uses an ARM Cortex processor, so I think the software is coming from a common source.

In the past the software used to be quite flakey in this style of light, but I think that a geek is now writing it. It manages to cram incredible functionality into a single very small ARM Cortex processor.

In hindsight I now realise that the unpopulated power supply area on the main PCB is actually the LED driver. I'd guess the use of an external driver in the yoke gives them better options for upgrading LED power.

One thing to note about these cheap disco lights is that their power supplies may not have electrical separation up to many countries standards. That's especially significant in the way the transformer is wound. In the event of insulation breakdown it's possible for a light to cause full mains voltage to appear on the common network, and potentially cause significant damage to other lights and control systems.

All in all I'm blown away by how well designed this light is.

This one (and the other variant I showed) came from AliExpress, but they are available from many other platforms. It's definitely a good idea to shop around, as the same light is rebranded under many names with a staggering price difference. As soon as one of the "brands" gets popular with DJs its price rockets.

Thermal overcurrent trips are amazingly simple inside

I was really surprised when I opened this up. I thought it was going to be much more complex.

These devices are purely intended to break current limited faults like overloads, and not really ideal for breaking high short-circuit currents.

One example of their use is in a motor circuit where the current increases dramatically when the motor stalls, and it's important to switch it off quickly before the motor suffers thermal damage.

They can also find use on the secondary side of transformers, where the fault current is inherently limited to a manageable level.

Quick test and a look inside a generic Hangell 60V 5A power supply

This is not a deep dive video with full reverse engineering. That would be very time consuming and be hampered by much of the functionality being in software.

Instead it's a modular look inside the unit to see what sort of separation there is, and the separate sections of the power supply.

It is important to select the correct voltage rating on the slide switch at the back of the power supply, to set it for a 120V or 240V supply. Connecting it to 220-240V while set for 120V will damage the unit.

The unit has three terminals on the front. Negative, Positive and Earth/Ground.
Because this is a high frequency switching power supply, I strongly recommend bridging the negative connection to the earth connection, as it will prevent the capacitively coupled leakage through the compact transformer from causing issues with sensitive components.

This style of power supply is rated 300W, although I don't recommend using it at full current for long periods of time. You can get 120V/3A, 60V/5A and 30V/10A units. I chose 60V as it is sometimes useful for testing higher voltage LED panels. A 30V power supply is ample for most workshops.

There are two overcurrent modes available. Standard, where the unit limits the output to the set current - and the voltage drops to match (Constant Current mode), and protective mode where overcurrent will instantly shut the output off and sound a warning.

The unit is notable for using a TL494 switchmode control chip that is found in many traditional switching supplies. It has a separate power supply for the control circuitry and USB outputs. The control power is managed by a DK124 chip.

I'm not a huge fan of the USB sockets being fed from the control circuitry power supply. It poses a risk of interfering with the operation of the control circuitry if high-current or noisy USB loads are plugged in.

Inside a HEX-light - and the slight electrical issues

This type of hexagonal lighting grid seems to be very popular in many modern retail outlets. It packs a large light into a small box as a series of illuminated batons and joining pieces that allow it to be assembled in various shapes to make a very large illuminated honeycomb grid on the ceiling or a wall.

There is an internal wire link in each strip that feeds power to all parts of the light grid.

There are issues though. Aside from the copper coated aluminium wire, the system is designed to have larger arrays fed at multiple points, and aside from the risk of someone trying to feed it from multiple circuits and causing a backfeed shock hazard, the connectors on some systems are not polarised and it is possible to cause a dead short through the flimsy internal wiring if plugs are not put on in the correct orientation. Ideally that would just trip a circuit breaker, but when one of an inappropriate size has been used there is a risk of the internal copper coated aluminium wire having a high enough resistance to cause sudden thermal issues.

To put multiple feeds on in the correct orientation may require probing between the plug and receptacle.

This one came from an eBay seller. You can find them on all the usual online selling platforms though. Note that there are multiple systems with different connectors and shades of white, so buy a larger kit than needed so you have some spares.

In a way it's quite a nice system, and quite fun to play with. It's also impressive how a huge honeycomb light grid can be shipped in such a small box.
