President Trump, speaking at the Republicans’ midterm convention, pledged that if Republicans maintained control of the Congress in the November election every adult American will receive 5,000 dollars from the government.

President Trump said that the government could afford the estimated 1.3 trillion dollars cost “because we’ve done so well and because our country is making so much money.”

The truth is the economy is not doing well. Prices are rising faster than incomes. And, thanks to the Iran War, the price of diesel fuel has reached an average of over six dollars a gallon. This increases shipping costs, thus further increasing many prices.

The national debt now exceeds 40 trillion dollars, which is one reason why interest on Treasury bonds is at the highest level since 2007.

President Trump claims the 5,000 dollars payments can be financed with tariff revenue. The truth is that the government has not collected nearly enough tariff revenue to finance these payments.

Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick has suggested the government could raise the funds through actions including selling its shares in the tech company Intel. Selling those shares would only raise at most four percent of the cost of the payments. Nonetheless, the federal government should sell all the shares it has acquired in private companies. This corporatist policy distorts the market by incentivizing businesses to put pleasing politicians and bureaucrats ahead of pleasing consumers.

Some commentators have expressed outrage over President Trump’s attempt to bribe voters. These commentators have tended to ignore the fact that, since the rise of the welfare-warfare-regulatory state, most political campaigns are little more than legalized bribery. How else would you describe politicians who court support from the military-industrial complex with promise to deliver endless wars financed by ever-increasing Pentagon spending? Or court votes of farmers with promises of ever-increasing farm subsidies? Or court votes of senior citizens with promises concerning Social Security and Medicare? Or promise to those whose standard of living and prospect for economic advancement are harmed by the Federal Reserve’s destruction of the dollar that government will take care of them with food stamps, Medicaid, and government-subsidized housing?

This system of legalized bribery makes it impossible to make real spending cuts because every item in the federal budget has a constituency behind it. Politicians are convinced that their electoral success depends on them protecting this spending.

This system of legalized bribery cannot last much longer. The continued failure of Congress and presidents to cut spending will further efforts to replace the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. This will cause a major economic crisis that will force Congress to cut spending.

President Trump could avoid this fate by fulfilling his promise of no new wars and working with Congress to cut the bloated military budget. President Trump should also end all forms of corporate welfare and work with Congress to shut down all unconstitutional federal agencies. The savings from these cuts should be used to start paying down the debt and support those reliant on government programs during the transition away from the welfare state. Returning to local communities, private organizations, and churches the responsibility to help the less fortunate is more effective and compassionate than leaving the matter to government bureaucracies. Following this agenda would allow President Trump to “bribe” the people with peace, prosperity, and liberty.

In California, gas stations are facing a unique challenge. The station signs are only configured to go up to $9.99 per gallon and at several stations the price of diesel has reached that maximum. Diesel prices are higher than they have ever been in history.

Worse, according to some news reports the advertising of the maximum price of $9.99 per gallon is meant to signal to truck drivers that they have run out of diesel altogether. Expensive diesel is a hit to the economy, but running out of the fuel at any price is a whole different kind of crisis.

Our highways are filled with semi-trucks burning diesel to bring the products we depend on to the markets. Our freight trains use diesel to transport what is not transported by truck. When the price of diesel increases, the cost of everything moved by that diesel also increases. This is one reason we are seeing much more inflation than the government wants to admit.

The diesel crisis is getting so serious that even President Trump has been forced to admit it. Of course, instead of taking at least part of the blame over his war of choice against Iran and his continuation of the proxy war against Russia through Ukraine, he is blaming Ukraine’s military strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.

Weekly Report - The Definition of Insanity

Albert Einstein is credited with saying, "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Whether he actually said it or not, the definition stands.

This definition also very well describes the Trump Administration’s war with Iran. According to media reports, President Trump was cajoled by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu that this would be an “easy war,” like Venezuela. Just assassinate the Iranian leadership, he promised, and the regime change would bring in a pro-America regime in Iran.

The CIA disagreed with the assessment, but Trump went with Netanyahu and the rest is history.

The “decapitation strikes” did not change leadership in Iran. As was the case in the US after the 9/11 attacks, the people rallied around the flag. The new leadership was less interested in a compromise than their murdered predecessors.

So the bombing began. Weeks of bombing. But that didn’t work – it only depleted our already-low weapons supplies.

Then “diplomacy” was substituted for bombs and a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by both sides. The US side immediately broke the agreement by attempting to open a new ship corridor by force and the bombs started flying again.

For the past month the bombs stopped only to start up last weekend, with a US strike on an Iranian island. This was followed again by multiple Iranian strikes on US bases in the region.

Bombs then diplomacy, bombs then diplomacy. President Trump has told us dozens of times that us the war is over, and we have won, but no one believes it any longer. He claims that the US completely controls the Strait of Hormuz while the shipping corridors are empty.

The US military has been stretched to the breaking point. US sailors and Marines endured a record-breaking deployment with terrible conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and other ships at sea. But this past weekend we saw the most telling sign of a military pushing back against orders that make no sense. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll resigned his position, reportedly due to disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the toll the war is taking on military readiness.

Weekly Report:One Bad Week

Despite promising to reduce government spending in all three of his presidential campaigns, President Trump, with the assistance of congressional Republicans and Democrats, has continued to grow the government debt.

Concerns over all but a handful of politicians in Washington, DC supporting adding to the government’s debt, along with worries over the effects of the ongoing Iran war, caused the interest rate on long term Treasury bonds (referred to as the yield) to increase. They reached their highest level since June of 2007 — a little over a year before the beginning of the great recession.

Following the yield increase, the Treasury Department announced on Wednesday that it would start purchasing at least twice the amount of long-term bonds that it had previously planned to purchase, reducing the supply of long-term bonds in an effort to reduce the yield. The Treasury’s intervention initially lowered yields. However, the next day the yield on Treasury bonds rose again.

The Treasury and the Federal Reserve will feel continued pressure to keep interest rates low. This is because a small percentage increase in interest rates can cause a big increase in US debt payments.

By keeping interstate rates artificially low, the Federal Reserve and the Treasury weaken the value of the dollar. This, along with the skyrocketing fuel prices as a result of the Iran war, is why wages are not keeping pace with the rising cost of living. Even many of the Americans whose paychecks are increasing are falling behind.

This erosion of the dollar’s value is why 29 percent of Americans have used buy now, pay later loans in the last year to pay for expenses such as rent and groceries. Another consequence of the dollar’s shrinking value is that, according to a survey by digital finance company Achieve, 53 percent of Americans are carrying credit card balances for necessary expenses.

Weekly Report: Support the Troops Bring Them Home!

Last week we heard that US sailors and Marines aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and other ships in the Middle East were being fed food that, from photos that surfaced in the media, looked worse than what you would feed a dog. Parents and spouses of service members risked disciplinary action against their loved ones to highlight to the US Navy Secretary and to the media the revolting conditions aboard the carrier, which has been at sea with no port of call for a record period of time.

Stories of broken toilets, filth, and mold everywhere were reported in the media last week. One troubling story in the Guardian claimed that multiple sailors aboard the Lincoln have attempted suicide due to the unbearable conditions aboard the carrier.

The Trump Administration’s response speaks volumes about its claim to “support the troops.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth immediately brushed off concerns about conditions aboard the Abraham Lincoln as “fake news.” He didn’t utter a word of concern for the troops he so enjoys being photographed working out with. He didn’t order a thorough review of the conditions on the ship. He didn’t promise to get to the bottom of things. He didn’t express any concern for the troops. He just said reports were “fake news.”
