In this video, I break down why plugging your phone into random USB ports can be risky, how attackers can use these connections to steal data or install malware ("juice jacking"), and how a cheap little gadget called a USB data blocker protects you.

This Legislation Will Ban Warrantless Spying

The federal government is spying on you, and they're doing it without a warrant.

Ludlow Institute helped create a bill to fix this. And on April 23, 2026, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) introduced this bill to the House.

We gave a press conference at the Capitol to introduce H.R. 8470 — the Surveillance Accountability Act, a landmark bill designed to restore the Fourth Amendment in the digital age.

Stop Giving Out Your Cell Number. Here's Why.

I just recently went to a website to set up a new account, and it wouldn't let me proceed without giving them a cell number. Not a VoIP number, it demanded a real cell number, associated with a SIM. I actually don't have one, because I don't have a SIM in my phone. On top of that, there are many reasons why someone might not want to hand out their cell number to everyone.

What should someone do in a situation like this? In this video I'll explain what you can do if someone asks for your cell number, and you don't want to give it to them. We'll talk about VoIP alternatives, and different methods for keeping your data protected.

You are effectively taking a very well protected environment, your phone, and extending trust to a much weaker one. Why doesn’t your doctor’s office feel like a safe place anymore?

Most people assume their medical conversations are private. But in the U.S., the moment your doctor enters something into your Electronic Health Record (EHR), it can be legally shared with over 2.2 million entities—often without your knowledge or consent.

Did you know there are financial incentives for providers to collect as much data as possible? That’s why they often document details that have nothing to do with your care that day. And if you ask your doctor not to include something in your record? You’ll likely be treated as the difficult one—for simply wanting privacy.

Because privacy is no longer the default. The default is feeding your most sensitive information into an opaque system designed to share it with a vast, invisible network of third parties.

In this short video, I share a real story from one of our NBTV members who tried to protect her privacy—and was overruled. It’s a revealing look at how medical data is handled, and how little control patients actually have.

Why I’m A Techno-Optimist

It’s easy to feel pessimistic, even hopeless, about the future of privacy in a world so deeply intertwined with technology. This is because we’ve been tricked into thinking that powerful technology can only be wielded by powerful entities who want to spy on us.

But I’m very much a techno-optimist. In this video I’ll explain why I believe that we have all the tools at our disposal to write a better future. I’ll also go over some groundbreaking innovations currently in development coming to our near future.

In this new digital world of mass surveillance, we’re far from powerless – we have every reason to feel energized and excited. For the first time, we have both the technology and the cultural momentum to take back our privacy. But we’ll only win it if we stop demonizing technology, and understand that it’s only by harnessing the powerful privacy tech at our disposal, building more of it, and incorporating it into our daily lives can we actually break free from our surveillance shackles.

Can Democracy Survive Without Privacy?

In the early 90s, Phil Zimmermann, the godfather of privacy, released a groundbreaking encryption program called Pretty Good Privacy, or PGP. This software allowed people to protect their email communications with robust encryption. The government then investigated Phil for 3 years, claiming that by spreading PGP around the world as free encryption software, he was engaging in munitions trafficking and jeopardizing U.S. national security.

The battle goes down in history as the first Crypto Wars, against encryption, and it was waged by people all over the world who believed that privacy was a fundamental right.

PGP became the most widely used email encryption software in the world. And thanks to his effort to make sure encryption tools remain available to the public, we now have the ability to protect our privacy.

But once again we find ourselves in another crypto war, with governments around the globe once again trying to undermine privacy.

I chat with Phil about why he created PGP, the current state of global surveillance, and why we must fight for the future of privacy.

Most people think that HIPAA means that their medical records are kept private. But what if I told you that HIPAA doesn’t protect your privacy at all?

This is our first video in a series about medical privacy, specifically looking at legislation that stripped individuals of the right to consent to medical data sharing.

But Fingerprint security is also very convenient, and for many people shouldn’t be ruled out as an option. We are constantly unlocking our phones all through the day. So choose something that will be sustainable for you and is justified by your threat model, otherwise you might drive yourself insane. There is no perfect answer when it comes to phone security, so make a decision based on your unique context.

The humble Contact List in our phone is a goldmine of data. Each contact is filled with the personal information like names, numbers, email addresses, home addresses, birthdays, work details and social media information. It’s the kind of information that data brokers salivate over because it allows unprecedented insight into consumer behavior, political leanings, and even potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited. The worst thing is, it's not even your information that's being taken -- When we don't protect our contacts list, it's the information that OTHERS have entrusted to us that we're sharing.

In this video I talk about Contact Lists, why you might not want to store them in your phone or share them with other apps on your device, and finally I’ll talk about more private ways to store them.
