The fallout has been catastrophic. This decades-old principle erased the protections meant to shield us from arbitrary government intrusion and opened the door to a future of unchecked surveillance and control. In this video, we'll break down what the third-party doctrine actually is, how it works in a digital world, and why it has to go.

00:00 Yes, The Government CAN Do That
01:22 4th Amendment Review
02:50 3rd Party Doctrine Explained
10:22 The Reasonable Expectation of Privacy Test
14:09 How We Solve This
16:40 Bailment: The Most Important Term You've Never Heard Of
19:52 Congress Needs to Step In

The lie at the heart of the third-party doctrine is that it tells us that participating in modern life means surrendering the protections we were supposed to have against government searches. But in an age where your data is bought from brokers, your movements are tracked by private contractors, and your financial records are collected in bulk… the protections warrants were designed to provide have been quietly gutted.

In this video, we break down how warrants actually work, why the founders were obsessed with getting them right, and what's changed in the digital era that should concern everyone.

There's a part of every warrant that almost no one talks about — and it's the part that matters most. Not a VoIP number, it demanded a real cell number, associated with a SIM. I actually don't have one, because I don't have a SIM in my phone. On top of that, there are many reasons why someone might not want to hand out their cell number to everyone.

What should someone do in a situation like this? In this video I'll explain what you can do if someone asks for your cell number, and you don't want to give it to them. Computers are less secure, and you downgrade your security when you link a privacy focused app, like Signal, to a less secure environment. You are effectively taking a very well protected environment, your phone, and extending trust to a much weaker one. For some people it will be worth it, but it's important to understand the tradeoffs.

00:00 I Do Not Use Signal desktop
00:28 How Phones Sandbox Apps
01:20 Desktop Security Explained
02:05 Not a Signal Issue
02:26 Desktops Widen Attack Surface
04:13 Hardware Backed Security Explained
05:13 The Risk Explained
06:14 Keep Your Phone Lean
06:50 We Want to Hear From YOU!

Security always collapses to the weakest link. That does not mean that Signal desktop is bad. It simply means desktops are inherently riskier environments. Unfortunately, email isn’t going anywhere in our society because it’s baked into how the digital world communicates; but luckily there are ways to make your emails more private. One tool that you can use is called PGP. In this video, I'll explain what PGP is, and show you how providers like Protonmail make it super easy to encrypt the contents of every email you send.

00:00 Email Was Never Built for Privacy
00:50 What is PGP
02:17 How PGP Works
06:43 Proton Tutorial
07:03 In-Network Emails
07:42 Out-of-Network Password Protected Emails
09:00 Out-of-Network PGP Protected Emails
10:37 Importing PGP Keys
11:49 Exporting and Sharing PGP Keys
12:35 How to Share Your Public Key
14:56 Phil Zimmerman and The Ludlow Institute

Phil Zimmerman said in his original PGP user guide text “Why I Wrote PGP” in 1991 that: “PGP empowers people to take their privacy into their own hands. Viewer discretion is advised.

You might think privacy is optional. Something you can worry about later. But right now there is a major war against privacy being waged. If governments can arrest the people who build privacy tools, then when the day finally comes where you might need them, those tools will not exist anymore.

I had the pleasure and heartache of interviewing Keonne Rodriguez, co-founder of Samourai Wallet, an open-source, non-custodial privacy wallet, who goes to prison this week because of the privacy tool he created.

The whole case against him was based on the idea that privacy itself is criminal. This is his story.

00:00 A Chilling Conversation
00:35 The War on Privacy
01:35 The Privacy Developer
14:45 The Privacy Wallet
20:08 The Arrest
24:12 The Charges
38:24 The Judge
40:43 The Deal
47:12 The Final Knife Twist
51:28 The War on Privacy Developers
56:04 How We Win the War

If you care about a future where privacy is still possible, you need to start paying attention now, because Keonne isn't the only privacy developer being targeted. This is happening all over the world, and we need to stand up for the people building the tools that protect us all.

Extra special thanks to Keonne Rodriguez for spending precious moments of his remaining freedom to give this interview.
If you want to help, go to https://billandkeonne.org/

Brought to you by NBTV team members: Lee, Derek Porter, Will Sandoval and Naomi Brockwell.

NBTV is a project of the Ludlow Institute, a 501c3 non profit whose mission is to advance freedom through technology.
To support NBTV, visit:
https://LudlowInstitute.org/donate
(As a 501(c)(3) non profit, all donations are tax-deductible in the USA as permitted by law.)

Visit our shop!
https://Shop.NBTV.media

Our eBook "Beginner's Introduction To Privacy:
https://amzn.to/3WDSfku

Beware of scammers, I will never give you a phone number or reach out to you with investment advice. And they’ve learned that nothing hooks us like outrage. But here's something many people don't realize: privacy and surveillance have everything to do with it. In this video I want to explore how surveillance is the key to polarization and how, ultimately, it's the engine that makes platform-driven polarization work.

00:00 We’re More Polarized Than Ever
00:27 Outrage
02:08 Manipulation
08:47 Targeting vs Filter Bubbles
10:05 What We Should Do

Privacy is our ally in this fight. The Doctor Did Anyway." />
Why doesn’t your doctor’s office feel like a safe place anymore?

Most people assume their medical conversations are private. But in the U.S., the moment your doctor enters something into your Electronic Health Record (EHR), it can be legally shared with over 2.2 million entities—often without your knowledge or consent.

Did you know there are financial incentives for providers to collect as much data as possible? That’s why they often document details that have nothing to do with your care that day. And if you ask your doctor not to include something in your record? You’ll likely be treated as the difficult one—for simply wanting privacy.

Because privacy is no longer the default. The default is feeding your most sensitive information into an opaque system designed to share it with a vast, invisible network of third parties.

In this short video, I share a real story from one of our NBTV members who tried to protect her privacy—and was overruled. It’s a revealing look at how medical data is handled, and how little control patients actually have.

If you’ve ever felt uneasy during a checkup, this might explain why.

00:00 The Reason For This Video
00:41 What Most People Do Not Know
01:50 Her Doctor DID WHAT
02:38 Once Data Leaves Your Hands
03:36 Healthcare Systems Are Prime Targets For Hackers
05:10 What Should Happen Instead
06:22 What We Can Do
07:39 YOU GUESSED THE TSHIRT RIGHT!

You should be able to go to the doctor and share what’s relevant without wondering who’s going to have access to that information later. If you want the strongest digital privacy, Linux is the gold standard. But if you're not ready to make the switch just yet, you can still dramatically improve your Mac’s privacy.

In this video, we walk you through privacy expert Michael Bazzell’s recommended macOS setup—from purchasing a device (without linking it to your identity), to reformatting, disabling invasive features, and installing the right tools.

00:00 Apple promises only THEY will abuse your data
02:20 Purchasing Your Mac
03:14 Choose a Model
03:41 Used Devices: Update, Reformat, Install OS
08:28 Initial Setup
11:32 WiFi and Bluetooth
11:50 OS Firewall
13:14 Notifications
14:16 Airdrop, Siri, and Sharing
15:33 Gatekeeper
18:26 Analytics and Ads
19:01 Time
20:15 Filevault
22:02 Dock, Wallpaper and Finder
25:35 Application Firewall / 3rd Party Apps
28:09 Conclusion

Apple does build decent privacy tools—but they definitely don’t make it easy to opt out of their own surveillance. With the right tools and configurations, though, you can take back control of your digital environment. While transferring data may seem convenient, it also means hauling along unnecessary ‘digital exhaust’—outdated apps, clutter, and potential privacy risks. In this video, I’ll show you why starting from scratch is smarter for both your security and sanity and share some essential tips for setting up a new device. Instead of quietly complying, Apple publicly disabled ADP entirely for UK users. By doing this, Apple alerted the world to the secret order—but it also left UK users vulnerable. Their backups, photos, notes, and more are now accessible to the government.

In this video, you'll learn exactly what Apple data is no longer private, and discover privacy-focused alternatives for your files, photos, emails, notes, and more. This is because we’ve been tricked into thinking that powerful technology can only be wielded by powerful entities who want to spy on us.

But I’m very much a techno-optimist. In this video I’ll explain why I believe that we have all the tools at our disposal to write a better future. I’ll also go over some groundbreaking innovations currently in development coming to our near future.

In this new digital world of mass surveillance, we’re far from powerless – we have every reason to feel energized and excited. For the first time, we have both the technology and the cultural momentum to take back our privacy. But we’ll only win it if we stop demonizing technology, and understand that it’s only by harnessing the powerful privacy tech at our disposal, building more of it, and incorporating it into our daily lives can we actually break free from our surveillance shackles.

00:00 I’m a technophile. It used to simply be about having the right to decide for ourselves who gets access to our data. But over the past decade we’ve lost that choice, and so much of our personal and sensitive information is shared without our knowledge or explicit consent.

In this video I want to give you a list of arguments you can use in response to anyone who dismisses the importance of privacy because they “have nothing to hide”.

00:00 “I Have Nothing To Hide”
01:33 Privacy is About Consent
02:35 Nothing to Hide, Everything to Protect
04:34 Privacy is NOT Dead
05:18 Your Data Is Forever
06:03 It’s Not About You
08:14 Uncertain Future
10:10 Surveillance Stifles Creativity and Dissent
11:30 Surveillance Isn’t About Criminals
12:29 Your Data Puts Others at Risk
14:25 You Send A Signal With Your Choices
16:21 A Fight We Can’t Afford to Lose

Surveillance is a weapon that is too often used to silence opposition, suppress individuality, and enforce conformity. Privacy is what allows us to think, act, and connect without fear. Without privacy, we lose the ability to dissent, to innovate, and to live freely. The next time someone says, “I have nothing to hide,” remind them of this: Privacy isn’t about hiding. It’s about protecting your rights, your choices, and your future.

Brought to you by NBTV team members: Lee Rennie, Cube Boy, Will Sandoval and Naomi Brockwell

To support NBTV, visit:
https://www.nbtv.media/support
(tax-deductible in the US)

Visit our shop!
https://Shop.NBTV.media

Our eBook "Beginner's Introduction To Privacy:
https://amzn.to/3WDSfku

Beware of scammers, I will never give you a phone number or reach out to you with investment advice. This software allowed people to protect their email communications with robust encryption. The government then investigated Phil for 3 years, claiming that by spreading PGP around the world as free encryption software, he was engaging in munitions trafficking and jeopardizing U.S. national security.

The battle goes down in history as the first Crypto Wars, against encryption, and it was waged by people all over the world who believed that privacy was a fundamental right.

PGP became the most widely used email encryption software in the world. And thanks to his effort to make sure encryption tools remain available to the public, we now have the ability to protect our privacy.

But once again we find ourselves in another crypto war, with governments around the globe once again trying to undermine privacy.

I chat with Phil about why he created PGP, the current state of global surveillance, and why we must fight for the future of privacy.

00:00 Governments Live in a Golden Age of Surveillance
00:58 Phil Zimmerman Introduction
02:34 Phil’s Motivation for Creating PGP
05:19 What’s at Stake if Government Abolishes Privacy
10:50 The Risk of Not Standing Our Ground
14:04 Surviving in a World Where Government Policy is Anti-Privacy
15:15 How to Create a Groundswell Movement
16:14 Highlighting Shifting Baselines
18:40 We Need to Obtain and Use Privacy Tools NOW
19:43 Governments are Pressuring Companies
20:18 Phil’s Parting Words of Advice
22:08 Policy vs Action

Everything that we do is surveilled and it’s not clear that democracy can survive governments having this level of omniscience. This video will explain.
Our expectations of privacy have shifted dramatically in the past few decades. What was once considered outrageous overreach has become normal, and we've lost sight of what a healthy amount of privacy even looks like. It's called shifting-baseline syndrome, first coined in relation to fish populations.

This video is based on a fantastic essay by Bruce Schneier and Barath Raghavan: We take stock of how privacy expectations have changed, and think about whether this is really the future we want to be moving towards.

00:00 Privacy is Like Fish - Huh?
00:38 Our Perception of Privacy
04:35 Fish???
05:55 Shifting Baselines
08:37 Is This the Future We Want?
10:43 Privacy is Like My Plant

A huge thank you to Bruce Schneier and Barath Raghavan for letting us reproduce their ideas in video form. The answer is not going to be the same for everyone. In this video, I look at the benefits and tradeoffs of using fingerprint readers, and try to compare the security of fingerprint unlock vs a pin or password. A major factor to consider is actually what kind of device you have.

00:00 You Asked, I Delivered!
00:56 What is Fingerprint Unlock
02:13 Should You Use Fingerprint Unlock
03:15 Convenience Consideration
04:18 Shoulder Surfing Protections
04:49 Biometrics are Forever
06:30 Brute Forcing
12:07 Coercion
14:40 Summary

Fingerprints are more like usernames than passwords. They’re unique, static and identifiable as belonging to you. But Fingerprint security is also very convenient, and for many people shouldn’t be ruled out as an option. We are constantly unlocking our phones all through the day. So choose something that will be sustainable for you and is justified by your threat model, otherwise you might drive yourself insane. Each contact is filled with the personal information like names, numbers, email addresses, home addresses, birthdays, work details and social media information. It’s the kind of information that data brokers salivate over because it allows unprecedented insight into consumer behavior, political leanings, and even potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited. The worst thing is, it's not even your information that's being taken -- When we don't protect our contacts list, it's the information that OTHERS have entrusted to us that we're sharing.

In this video I talk about Contact Lists, why you might not want to store them in your phone or share them with other apps on your device, and finally I’ll talk about more private ways to store them.

00:00 Your Phone Compromises Your Contacts
00:28 Overview
00:39 Why Contacts Lists Are Important
01:51 Who Sees Our Contact List
05:37 Private Ways To Store Contacts
06:23 Reviewing App Permissions
06:57 Third Party Contact Apps
07:53 Encrypted Contact Storage
08:43 Graphene: The Ultimate Solution
09:57 It’s Time to Take Back Control!

By disabling automatic cloud syncing, regularly reviewing and managing our apps’ contact permissions, and using privacy-focused apps and services, we can reduce the indiscriminate harvesting of our social graph.
