You should know that when you "delete" a file on your computer in your operating system, whether Linux, Windows or Mac, the file is not *really* deleted or overwritten until the space is needed for new data. This is beneficial when you accidentally delete a file, but is dangerous when you "delete" a sensitive file and falsely feel like you're safe.

Linux has the command `shred` which overwrites files with random data, which solves this issue. You can also output /dev/urandom or /dev/zero to blank or distort empty space on a drive.

Even in the case of encrypted drives, it's a good idea to use /dev/urandom or obscure unused or previously used space to prevent metadata leakage about how much you've stored on the drive or what used to be on it, in a way that could tie you to an important USB drive or computer.

Install Artix or Arch Linux (Encrypted system)

Here's how you set up Artix and Arch Linux with an encrypted root/home drive. I cover not just encryption, but installation for legacy BIOS and UEFI machines, but also what differences you'll encounter on Artix's different init systems. I also talk about automatic logons and such.

Note that the only thing different between Arch and Artix are renamed commands (pacstrap vs. basestrap and genfstab vs. fstabgen and artix-chroot vs. arch-chroot). Artix can come with either runit, openrc, s6 or dinit as an init system and setup for all is the same except for the desired package is installed initially as is the command to enable the network interface.

The episodic nature of kids' cartoon shows has had inevitable effects on we look at life. They breed both false senses of permanence and of futility due merely to how episodic TV shows must be constructed. Plots never advance. Characters never really mature.

It's no leap to say there is a relation between that and the fact that now generations that watched these shows have notoriously matured little and create lives around non-progress, non-accomplishment and view their lives as repeating constantly their same unsolved psychological issues and personal hold-ups, over and over again.

This applies to the consumption of other media as well, like YouTube and even video games. Everything is small variations on a familiar and unadvancing theme on to eternity. Nihil novi sub sole.

I Encrypt All My USB Drives with LUKS.

I show you how to setup an encrypted USB drive with a LUKS partition and cryptsetup. I wrote a script to automatically decrypt and mount drives on the fly too which does this automatically. Get it here:

If you want your computing to be as efficient as possible, you should have as little as possible. Here I plan downsizing and ask for a way to do everything more efficiently. Is there actually a decent computer with a trackpoint, ultrabase or dock which can handle livestreams and is still easily repairable?... I.e. without planned obsolescence?

Coreboot, 1080p screens, MSATA and a decent on-board mic and webcam are pluses, but the goal is to totally eradicate the need for two computers.

(NOTE: I released this video on my PeerTube instance (https://videos.lukesmith.xyz) a while ago and realized I forgot to upload it to YouTube, so here it is, and still relevant).

After some annoyances, I decided to make my life easier by switching Based.Cooking over to using Hugo, a static site generator written in Go which has tagging abilities and other niceties. Not only has it made the site easier to maintain, but I've added some other perks like a simple Javascript list filter and I've enjoyed Hugo so much I switched by personal website (https://lukesmith.xyz) over to it as well.

Superchats with Monero (Shadowchat)

I've been using shadowchat (https://github.com/lukesmithxyz/shadowchat) for a while to receive donations with messages (superchats) with Monero. It's just a simple program written in Go and doesn't need anything else too fancy to work.

It also works with OBS and shows notifications and sends notification emails if you want that as well.
