Anecdotes include Haliburton food, hookah shishas sessions in Qatar, religious concessions, cables on marble walls, hiking in rolling hills and meeting local folks getting just getting by in their war-torn world.

Better Domes & Gardens – #BCInvasion, part 4

Our family adventure rolls on by seaplane to Geodesic Wonderland in Metchosin on Vancouver Island. We settled for some relaxing times, rejuvenation and loads of barbeque with wonderful hosts, Neal and Joanne.

After a brief soliloquy about balancing between “stealth mission” and “waving flags” to say hello… we enjoy sojourns at the expensive grounds with dogs, hot tub and forest. Then the intrepid travellers also make an excursion to Butchart Gardens with carousel and peacocks where Ryoko documented *every single* plant and tree.

We also savored an old-time photography experience resulting in cinematic Daguerreotype tinplate along with a few surprises, including Nick Bantock art (will meet him later in the series) and a book called “So It Is" featuring a creative water-soaked shot of UncleWeed and KK at a mural wall in Vancouver + David Suzuki and bev. davies.

Starting with a substrate of elephant dung paper from Sri Lanka, adding various inky stamps – including one designed by Nick Bantock – then writing postcardy prose with fountain dip pen, adding daguerreotype photo by Ken Miner, peeking at various inspiration sources, cutting, pasting, rolling, more stamping, mistaking, remixing, fiddling....

Then flashing through international , domestic and unique stamps, stacks of addressed cards, postboxes utilized for dispatching, sneaking a few hand deliveries to special recipients, *and* a montage of previous 4 new year cards – displaying completely different techniques – finishing with exquisite time travellers from Tsuchida Cottage.

So tired, heading to bath and bed.

PS while the bath is running however, a few brief remarks about a year of reunions – both inbound and outbound – (seems like too much but it's never enough), gratitude for quality healthcare after so many hospital visits, and hooray for a great "forest preschool" run by the YMCA for Ichiro.

more to say about next year and the theme of "calm" and other schemes and dreams but we'll save that for another chitchat, shall we?

Items Ahoy! Food treats, presents, snacks, mugs, books etc. from #BCinvasion

A montage of snapshots of all sorts of items unpacked from our trip to Vancouver, BC (aka #BCInvasion) upon returning to home at Tsuchida Cottage, Okayama, Japan.

This dispatch includes food treats including: fig newtons, almond brittle, three kinds of hot sauce, nectarine jam, dried strawberries and jam, couple kinds of oatmeal, a few kinds of honey, many teas, favourite chocolate bars, mayo (yes really), peanut butter bars, Old Bay, flower seeds, Sons of Vancouver Distillery concoctions and creations… and much more. Oh JJ Bean coffee (send more please!) - added Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia although that did not make the trip back :)

Also, all sorts of delightful presents received from thoughtful friends, especially books (about trees, Vancouver, coloring, and whatnot), inky stamps, pencil markers, cookie cutters, journals to fill, stuffed pup, tea towels, awesome bubble tea jacket, scarf, and a whole variety of mugs (so many!), and even charcuterie plate accessory. Noteworthy is a ceremonial First Nations rattle.

Then a few household items like a dutch oven pot, bamboo towels, and finally, a few cute photos of me (Dave), and the darlings Ryoko and Ichiro Stanley at the airport saying sayonara as a tiny token of memory and regards to pals met along the way.

Finally, a line-up of suitcases packed full with smoked salmon, maple cookies, jerky, for presents, yowza.

Future dispatchers will include more snapshots of you wonderful humans who connected with us along the way, plus probably more plants, trees, tea ceremony, wonderful meals, and "my favourite things" i.e. postboxes, typewriters, stationery plus Chinatown wanders and other side-quests and sojourns.

Origin Story::

Many of the vinyl record were waiting since the summer of 1991, patiently held by friend Daniel Jr’s father Daniel Sr (rip), then transferred to buddy Dane's house, and picked up by brother Andrew and then held at brother Dan's… Yes it gets confusing but well worth it – Plus, records ordered the USA and Canada and, to avoid shipping to Japan, sent to buddy Lance or brother Dan's house… Yes more unnecessarily confusing.

Books include special deliveries from Ken Sanders Rare Books in Salt Lake City, UT as well as other vendors scattered around the world who shipped to buddy Lance’s house in Olympia, Washington, and brothers Andrew (sometimes in Las Vegas) and Dan often in Surrey. Thanks fellas!

These photos were snapped while starting to pack up at a garage in Langley BC as a reference inventory but, as it goes, you come home, everything gets scattered so here we go. An unexpected final dispatch from the garden at Tsuchida Cottage as we are just home from the BC invasion trip & also a funeral (dear mother-in-law’s aunt, 89 years old) which created impetus for a trim up, black suit and tie, and an unexpected detour.

Anyhow, so much gratitude as i fumble through a quick riff – with nephew Lee (who joined our traveling coterie) playing sax in the background – for all the folks who found us along the way, and regrets for those we didn’t connect with, an endless desire for more time and more of everything importantly admiration and respect for the doctors who have pasted me together to get me on the road, followed by an unnecessarily long explanation to say “thanks from a tiny shareholder” to the ANA ground crew staff who came through big time on a very complicated switcheroo at Haneda (due to my ridiculous assortment of luggage filled with books, records, jars of tasty things, art, chocolate, salmon etc.) and to wonderful in-laws who and carted us home in van Agnes and splendid mini dump truck Ume. Whew.

Amongst all of this banter is a recap of the theme/objectives of the trip: Ichiro meeting his family; Ryoko seeing lots of plants, parks and gardens; and me facing down some “ghosts” & really writing new chapters and letting folks know that I am OK.

Plus distributing more than 100 gift packets and clearing out stashes and caches.

A decade is indeed the longest possible stretch of time, long enough for “everything” to happen… breaking life down beyond the foundation and rebuilding from scratch into a new splendid reality.

This is bits of my story, and oh yeah, there’s an interview with me at Open Medicine Foundation as part of their may momentum fundraising campaign to find solutions for the conundrum of #MECFS and all the related post viral conundrums which create challenging situation for so many humans, including me for 10 years, probably right to the day.

Do you have questions? Is there a story we started but didn’t finish? Something I said “I’ll totally send that to you”? If yes (or no), give me a ring. I mean we really can call each other and *just chitchat* on the phone like it’s the 1980s / except without mom and dad saying “you’ve been on the phone long enough, I’m expecting a call”.

Obv exhausted but full of appreciation as we traversed the Greater Vancouver Regional District from Lynn Valley (lots of emotions, ghosts, a few demons, but wonderful vibes from the end of the line), to Sons Of Vancouver distillery, then across Ironworker’s Memorial bridge to pick up a fantastic couple of paintings from artist John Ferrie, then to a secret location in north Burnaby to acquire some archival items including the original “Letters from Russia” (you read this right?) And now back to checkpoint 2/12 Grammy’s house in Langley for stretch run.

We’ve got a few family activities planned (scrapbooks, sortganizing etc), and packing up an incredible assortment of things acquired along the way (thank you!)

Plus The Matinee live in Langley on the 19th (join us?) and possible/probable meet up at Bear Creek Park on Sunday.

Does anyone know a specific place in Bear Creek park I can put a pin in and spread the word? I know it’s short notice and not necessarily convenient but we’re still trying to see as many of you as possible.

Thanks to everyone who’s taken time to come meet with us, share hugs, stories, snacks, rides, coffees… All of it is mentally inventoried, savored and remembered.

Accidentally a promotional riff about the unique historic general store “end of the line“ in beloved Lynn Canyon with departments for vintage toys (i bought a pack of fake mustaches), jewelry, semi-legal & salty sweets, tea towels, shot glasses, paintings as well as… you know, coffee, sandwiches, and what not.

Anyway, despite reconnaissance yesterday, the start of our rendezvous was a little bit stubbly as the café was resealing the asphalt seating area however, with an adaptable and eccentric assortment of lovely humans, we took a little wander down the Varley trail, not far, just to my favorite nook… to light incense, bring back some memories, enjoy some conversations and medicine.

Tomorrow, we’re back south across the inlet and the river with a few errands along the way as we switch into “pick it up, pack it down and get ready to ship out” mode.

Still hoping to do a few more visits (possibly with you :-)) sorry the time slips away so fast but please know we’re doing our best.

With Capilano River rushing in the background, a quick update to say that tomorrow (Tuesday) is kind of last chance to hook up with us while on the North Shore.

The *plan* is to rally up at the “end of the line café” in Lynn Valley near the trailheads to Varley, Rice Lake and Baden Powell trails around 10:30 AM, have some coffees and some chitchat and then go on a ramble on one of the trails – slow and easy, light some incense and look at big trees till around 2:30 ish PM.

Of course, you should come join us.

We’re into the homestretch of this trip… Of course, not near enough time to do as much as everything one can dream but still, our days have been more packed then we could’ve imagined.

That’s all thanks to you of course.

After this, we’re back to Surrey/Langley for some end of the trip logistic tasks and good times.

Feeling a certain lightness back at checkpoint 10 in Lynn Valley brings a friendly salutation to the mothers in my life and all the folks play the role of mother in the lives of others.

Then more discussion about “am I having fun?“ A: “Yes, because I’m doing the things I love (meeting up with people and sharing gifts and stories)” *but* also there has been a lot of logistics to make this trip happen which is only be possible due to the folks who have shown up to be part of our experience, and also offered us rides, beds, meals, hugs, gifts. hack we’ve even got at least four members of the “three timers club” already.

And, a bit of discussion about how I’m managing doing *all of this* while dealing with #MECFS )which, has a special awareness day today which I should put the hashtag for} // yes, it’s a misunderstood and hard to explain illness, it’s very very real, and growing exponentially thanks to the recent public health conundrum).

I’m very grateful for the doctors at Okayama University Hospital who have found some new treatment protocols for me which prepared me for this trip.

Plus, a special “I’m doing my best” to folks have tried to find us but ran into geographic and communication challenges. I’m putting the pins & information as many places as possible but I’m also using a travel eSIM and as such, sometimes connection is a little bit dodgy and also I’m trying to keep the phone in the pocket as much as possible, plus I am in capable of planning more than a day or two in advance due to the uncertainty of my energy levels.

I know, it doesn’t make sense, remember, remember: I’m trying to have fun too 🙂.

(Regarding this trip) today, someone asked me,

“Are you having any fun?“

It threw me for a loop somehow as I’m doing many fun things I love // which is mostly connecting with humans, hanging out in nature, mainlining nostalgia, sharing crafty gifts and most importantly introducing my darlings to family and friends… but I’ve also realize i still have a hard time just letting myself *turn off* the nervous anxious tension that comes with the #MECFS illness and being exhausted and in pain all the time. Living on adrenaline from all the goodness reflecting our way.

Anyhow, forget all my conundrums as this is a blurb to express gratitude to *all of you* who have come out to be part of our “BC invasion” & brought gifts, given rides (oh my goodness, so helpful!), brought wonderful food, opened homes, completed cryptic & complicated “follow this pin” challenges, shared hugs and stories (and listen to my story over and over again) and so on. We are very fortunate to know each of you.

We’re now in Lynn Valley (gift stash is depleted but should get to a secret cache tomorrow) for five nights which should include a salmon barbecue, visit to the shipyard, a visit with friends along the creek, and of course the Varley trail and suspension bridge before heading back to Langley/Surrey for tidying up, maxing out our luggage allowance with books and records and getting ready to cross the vast Pacific again.

Will we see you? Pencil in “Sunday at the Shipyards” (which yes will probably be quite hectic and busy but hopefully we can find a corner to hang out // this dev wasn’t built when I was here last time very eager to investigate.

Going to skip Granville Island market tomorrow, it’s quite loud, busy and hectic

Instead, something else in the Kits area including a few logistics of picking up art, meeting with accountant and hopefully a music promotion legend. Maybe we ride the lil False Creek ferries around?

Friday has Kitsilano park near the playground 1130 till 230 more or less for a DIY picnic.

We’re low on gifts and commemorative cards but we’re still chooglin along and doing our best.

From a busy hotel buffett room comes today (Monday) plan of action which includes a horse drawn tour (which you probably won’t want to do because it’s expensive and touristy).

Then meet up at the Japanese war Memorial Cenotaph in behind the aquarium for bring your own box lunch hang out where we’ll also light incense.

Hello from a suburban strip mall, we’re on our way to West End for Stanley Park hang outs. From today (19) to 25 when we float plane to Victoria.

Staying at Marriott residence inn on Hornby near Davie, plannig on parks every day, bring picnics and thermos. We’re really trying to not go much beyond are the small radius.

We also have gifts, it’s a great time to meet up. Keep in mind traveling with a toddler means everything happens at toddler optimized time ls + I am delicate/fragile.

All these records bring me joy so i am tidying up in the wake of a super enjoyable visit from @ricefieldrecords and a used record fair in nearby Ushimado. I putter along talking about how i organize the records into "neighbourhoods" so they have pals to hang out with, pull out some box sets, try to find where i put that "one thing" and where *exactly* this one fits best while wearing an moth-eaten cardigan and noticing my beard is compensating for my thinning noggin (still cute :)). Finishes with flipping through some 7 inches while playing a live clip recorded at Ubud Jazz festival.

BC Invasion trip / energy vs expectations and plans

Feeling a little bit antsy and in a tizzy about all the plans and options for upcoming trip [April 11 ~ May 25] to Vancouver & Victoria etc areas. #driBC

So, first I'm very grateful for everyone's participation and for simply remembering me after i disappeared with illness and other conundrums.

Next, extending a warm invitation to come meet us at various parks and gardens where we'll be with a picnic blanket and a thermos of coffee at checkpoints in:
* Surrey/Langley
* Downtown/West End
* Metchosin/Victoria
* Pender Island
* Lynn Valley
* with a pitstop in Kits/Fairview
* then back to Surrey/Langley

"Main point" of the trip is for my darling wife and adorable son to meet family as well as to reconnect with hugs and gifts with so many of you wonders.

Especially eager to meet kids for Ichiro to hang with at wonderful playground. Also, so grateful for recent friends coming to visit and participating in our life.

My big concern is "crashing" with this illness which puts me out of action for days/weeks. Good news is: doing the best i have in years thanks to some recent treatment protocols and modalities.

I'm doing my best but/and if we can't meet, no big deal – its complicated and folks have lives/jobs etc, please come to Japan! A safe, efficient, interesting, amusing, and somewhat affordable destination where we will be happy to welcome you with tea and goats.

I'm doing my best and eager to avoid micro-planning on phone robot and dealing with the social media diaspora if you know what i mean. Oh, there's a GDoc, hit me up if you want access.
